The preseason is all about taking advantage of opportunities.
If there’s one receiver who made the absolute most of his opportunities on Saturday, it’s Daurice Fountain. By the end of the game, Fountain led the Chiefs in receptions (4), targets (6) and receiving yards (38).
“I just really went into the game today just saying, ‘I’ve got to take advantage of my reps,’” Fountain told reporters following the game. “Coach Reid, Joe (Bleymaier) and everybody else, they’ve been doing a really good job of helping me prepare and get ready for these preseason games just to get an opportunity to go out and showcase my skill.”
A former fifth-round draft pick by the Indianapolis Colts in 2018, Fountain first latched on with Kansas City following a tryout at rookie minicamp. He’s slowly been ascending the depth chart ever since, which comes somewhat as a surprise considering that Fountain is a different type of receiver than the team typically boasts.
“Man, I just try to bring a physical presence,” Fountain said. “A lot of them guys — it’s a track team in that room. It’s like, you know, I just try to bring that physical presence — try to just play my game. Wherever it may be, whatever they want me to do I just bring that to the receiving corp.”
Chiefs HC Andy Reid made sure that the team gave Fountain a number of different looks on Saturday. Beyond his impact catching the ball, Fountain also got involved as a blocker and on special teams, returning a kick for 21 yards.
“It’s really special,” Fountain said. “The Chiefs have always been an elite team in the league so when they gave me the opportunity, I was just grateful. I just had to thank God because, obviously, you can see this receiving corps is stacked. So coming in off the rookie minicamp tryout, this is all a blessing revealing itself to me. It was real special.”
Fountain didn’t just prove something to the coaching staff, but he also proved that he belonged with the Chiefs’ stacked receiver corps by taking full advantage of his opportunity. And he’s already raring for his next opportunity to impress.
Mannn Friday can’t come soon enough…
