LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — The Nebraska University system has made changes to its covid guidelines.
Masks and vaccines are not required. People on the UNL campus gave mixed reviews to the announcement.
Masks and vaccines are now optional but strongly recommended.
“I’ll still wear my mask in crowded places for my own safety,” said Cho.
This impacts students like Hyeri Cho who says she’s glad to have the option but is worried as the delta variant cases surge and her parents in Korea tell her to mask up.
“Honestly it’s all about the trust,” said Cho. “Like I hope unvaccinated people will just do their duties and wear the mask but there’s no way we can like check it directly, so I’m worried. I’m vaccinated.”
Vaccinated students and staff are not required to wear masks. Unvaccinated people are encouraged to wear masks.
Vaccinations are not required but are strongly recommended for those on campus and people do not have to disclose their vaccine status to nu.
Parents visiting the campus with their son disagree with the plan, saying the number of cases should determine that masks be required for all.
“I don’t agree with the school’s policy but they’re in a hard spot I don’t envy them whatsoever,” said Neil, a father touring the school with his family.
“I would say I disagree,” said Chris. “For me, better criteria for if you mask or don’t mask is the community transmission, and once you reach a certain level like less than 5 per 100,000, then you might be able to take off masks, for not just vaccinated but unvaccinated people.”
U-N president Ted Carter is still encouraging students and staff to get vaccinated to slow the spread of COVID-19.
