Vanderbilt baseball signee Joshua Baez was drafted in the second round, 54th overall by the St. Louis Cardinals on Monday.
A 6-foot-4 outfielder, Baez is the two-time Massachusetts Gatorade Player of the Year. In 2021, he batted .378 with three home runs and 13 RBIs. He had a 1.94 ERA, which translates well to outfield arm strength. He has a lot of raw power at the plate, though he strikes out a lot.
From Brookline, Baez is the first high school position player from Massachusetts taken in the first three rounds since 2014, and the first prep player overall since 2017.
Like all high school draft picks, Baez has a tough choice to make between signing or heading to Vanderbilt, where he could be a standout in the outfield. He will have until Aug. 1 to sign.
