Gary F. Bell, artistic director of Stray Dog Theatre, said that as an actor, Neiman “was really good at creating unique and interesting characters — especially characters who were outsiders.” Neiman was nominated for a Kevin Kline Award for his starring role in Stray Dog’s 2005 production of “The Elephant Man.”
“He was really wonderful in that role,” Bell said.
Neiman also performed in productions at the American Shakespeare Center in Virginia, the Connecticut Repertory Theatre and the Berkshire Theatre Festival in Massachusetts.
He is survived by his wife, Louise Edwards Neiman, and their daughter, Eliyah “Ellie” Neiman, of St. Louis; his mother, Lainie Neiman (Dick Goldberg), of St. Louis; his father, Bennett (Sandy) Neiman, of Austin, Texas; and his brother, David Neiman, of New York City, and his sister, Emily Asher (Simon) Abramson, of High Falls, New York, and their three children.
