SPRING CLEANING: Drop off your hard-to-recycle items this weekend

Local advocates for recycling want you to join your community by giving your old clothes, bedding, electronics, and more to the CHaRM event this weekend.

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Local advocates for recycling want you to join your community by giving your old clothes, bedding, electronics, and more to the CHaRM event this weekend.

“It’s just really a one-stop collection for all of your spring cleaning like cleaning out these materials that accumulate in the garage and in the house,” said Megan Jackson, Nebraska Recycling Council program director.

“Making it just as easy to recycle responsibly instead of throwing them out into the landfill.”

CHaRM stands for a collection of hard to recycle materials and the Nebraska Recycling Council is bringing back the local event after taking a hiatus last year because of the pandemic.

Jackson said to fill up the back of your car and come and park. Volunteers will unload your recyclables while you stay in the vehicle.

She adds one positive for recycling is the pandemic showed it is essential. Workers were needed to move materials and some of those were in high demand to make masks and hand sanitizer bottles.

“What’s really exciting and so validating is recycling became identified as this is an essential service,” said Jackson. “We do we need to continue to have our materials managed.”

There is a $10 suggested donation per car as a fundraiser for the Nebraska Recycling Council.

Some items you can bring are documents for shredding, Styrofoam, scrap metal, and batteries. An extra fee will apply for TVs.

The CHaRM event is at the Nebraska Innovation Campus from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. For more info, visit here.
