“He’s just a sneaky, good, solid player,” Shildt said.
But Edman was left on base twice Friday as the Cardinals stranded 12. “We’ve got to be better at creating more opportunities,” Shildt said.
Lefthanders’ updateLefthander Wade LeBlanc, who has an elbow problem, threw a flat-ground session Saturday and is due to throw off the bullpen mound shortly. Lefthander Kwang Hyun Kim, who also has an elbow issue, recovered well from his 34-pitch rehab outing in Memphis on Thursday night but Shildt said he didn’t know if Kim would need another minor league rehab game.
Shildt said that if Kim wanted to come back as a starter, then he probably would need one more. “If he came back now, (it would) likely be as a reliever,” said Shildt.
For now, the Cardinals’ rotation is Adam Wainwright, Jack Flaherty, Jon Lester, Miles Mikolas and J.A. Happ, who started on Saturday. Wainwright will finish the Pirates’ series on Sunday, with Flaherty and Lester to oppose Detroit here on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Ultimately, Shildt said the Cardinals, when they get their starters healthy, could go to six starters. “I doubt we’ll go to seven,” he said, meaning that one of the rehabbing pitchers might wind up in the bullpen, which is where LeBlanc opened his stint with the Cardinals before being moved into the rotation.
