KANSAS CITY, Mo. —

As kids start heading back to school and parents start looking for ways to pay for bigger items, one Kansas City company says it can help.

Parent Mike Long wanted to make sure his kids had cellphones before the new school year started.

“Have a quick connection saying that we’re not going to be home at the expected time,” he said.

He said he searched on Kansas City-based Swappa.com, a spot several area parents are navigating to this year.

“A lot of students want a Chromebook. You can get a Chromebook from $200 to $400,” said Sara Beane, of Swappa.com.

Swappa.com is about going back to school in an affordable way.

“The pandemic has really hit people hard financially. You know, going back to school, all the things you have to buy are so expensive,” Beane said.

Swappa works a lot like Marketplace.

“I think a lot of people just don’t realize that you can buy a really good laptop for your student, an iPad, and you can buy at a discount if you buy gently used,” Beane said.

The site connects people looking to buy and sell and guarantees that what you buy works.

“Some of the younger kids, maybe K through sixth, might need an iPad,” Beane said.

She said it is about using the back-to-school budget wisely.

“We all care about saving money and also support a local company people may not be familiar with,” Beane said.

Swappa.com was started by a Kansas City software developer in 2010.
