North Iowa Recreational Spot to Reopen Friday – KCHA News

After being closed to the public for the last two weeks due to an increase in unlawful activities, a popular recreational spot in Worth County will reopen Friday (06.25) with restricted hours.

Kuennen Quarry, located in the Kuennen Quarry Wildlife Area, about 20 miles north of Mason City, was closed off to public access by the Worth County Conservation Board and the Worth County Sheriff’s Office after an incident June 10th.  That night, authorities received a 911 call of a person passed out, blue in the face, and CPR was in progress. After emergency response personnel arrived and revived the 18-year-old male from Hollandale, Minnesota, he was arrested for public intoxication.

The Worth County Sheriff’s Office said it was the latest in a series of unsavory activities at the quarry. From June 1st to 10th, sheriff’s deputies and conservation officers investigated cases of vandalism, fights in progress, narcotics sales, brandishing of firearms, assaults, littering, and alcohol violations.

Wednesday, the Worth County Conservation Board announced Kuennen’s Quarry will reopen for the upcoming weekend with the hours of 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday through Sunday. In a Facebook statement, the board said, “We will be reevaluating Monday following the weekend and hopefully start by adding days. Once we are back to 7 days a week, we will look at adding hours.  If the gate is closed, the park is also closed.  We ask that if you see any illegal activity to report it so we can continue to keep the park open.  We appreciate your cooperation and understanding.”
