Mental health group gets city funds to continue helping officers and community

The Mental Health Association of Nebraska is providing living room spaces and homes so mental health participants can have a better place to heal.

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Officers have a few options when dealing with a person with mental health issues. They can either take them to a jail cell or a nice living room space provided by a local organization.

The Mental Health Association of Nebraska is providing living room spaces and homes so mental health participants can have a better place to heal.

The City of Lincoln noticed, deciding to fund the organization with $160,000.

“It allows us to expand our services to places like the living room,” said Magdanz. “Between that and the Woods Charitable Fund, this has really been a space where people can get recover, respite, and a person to listen to them.”

Lincoln police responded to nearly 4,000 mental health calls in 2020, which is more than the past five years combined.

Magdanz says they handled over 500 referrals last year. He adds the spaces help officers community police.

“If the officer can get that person here, that is ideal,” said Magdanz. “If not we’re going to try to meet them where they are at. We’re going to go over resources they might be looking for. We’re going to sit with them, try to develop an ongoing relationship, and really listen to what they need.”

A man who received help, a few years ago, shares how the programs helped him.

“I was a juvenile defender so I had never really been out on the streets of society as an adult,” said Jeremy Lyons. ” I opened my first bank account with them, with Amy and MHA I learned how to drive here.”

Thursday was his first day as a worker.
“It’s really giving people the tools to help themselves,” said Lyons.
