LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Energy efficiency in your home is not only important for energy saving but can also help maintain and extend the life of your equipment.
Jay Stoa is an Energy Services Specialist for LES. He says there are a few simple steps you can do right now and one of them is to look at the bottom part of your refrigerator.
“We are going to see a lot of that dust that’s collected on this coil, so cleaning that coil is not only going to make it efficient but cleaning it is going to potentially extend the life of the refrigerator,” Stoa said.
Stoa says you should vacuum and clean the coil once every six months. The next thing you want to look at is your windows.
“Usually in the spring or the fall people will open their storm window but when the season gets hot or cold you want to make sure you are closing that to get the full benefit of the storm and then just make sure that it is always latched so you are creating that seal,” Stoa said.
You should be looking out for similar things when it comes to your doors.
“On the opening of your door, you have this little weather stripping that is going all along the door itself and this is really good, you are creating a real good seal but if you see daylight or you are getting a draft, that’s really where you want to concentrate and maybe improve some of those efficiencies to reduce that air leakage,” Stoa said.
As for your AC unit, Stoa says you should have it serviced on a regular basis.
“If you have an obstructed coil here, whether it be dirt, cottonseed, bushes, you are just making that unit work a little harder than it needs to be so it’s very important to clean that, this is something you can do, you use a vacuum to clean it,” Stoa said.
Stoa says you should leave a lot of the furnace stuff to the experts. However, you should check and replace your furnace filter once a month or every few months.
