THE NEXT CHIEF OF POLICE CARL OAKMAN BEFORE THIS CARL OPEN WAS A KANSAS CITY, MISSOUI DEPUTY CHIEF COMMANDING THE PATROL DIVISION NOW, HE LEADS A FORCE AUTHORIZED TO HAVE MORE THAN 340 OFFICERS, BUT HE COMMANDED MANY MORE THAN THAT JUST IN THE MISSOURI PATROL DIVISION AND HE BECOMES CHIEF AT A CHALLENGING TIME THE FIRST THING YOU HAVE TO DO IS LISTEN MEET PEOPLE LISTEN AND BEGIN TO BUILD TRUST INTERNALLY AND EXTERNALLY THERE’S A LOT OF MISTRUST IN OUR COMMUNITY AS WELL AS OTHER COMMUNITIES ACROSS THE COUNTRY. KCK DOES NOT HAVE A RACIAL MAJORITY CENSUS DATA SAYS HISPANICS OUT NUMBER BLACKS IN THE CITY OAKLAND’S DEBUT WAS AT THIS NEWS CONFERENCE AND ONE OF THE SCENARIOS HE AND THE OTHER FINALISTS WENT THROUGH WAS A FICTITIOUS CONFERENCE AND IT WAS TENSE. THAT’S WHEN I LEARNED WHAT I DID. I WAS VERY IMPRESSED WITH WHAT I SAW JUST EXPLAINED TO THE COMMUNITY THE REASONS WHY WE DO WHAT WE DO THROUGH TRANSPARENCY. The Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department has a new leader.KCKPD announced Friday it has hired Karl Oakman, who is currently the deputy chief and a 29-year veteran of the Kansas City, Missouri, Police Department.Oakman will step in and command the more than 300 officers of the KCKPD, who respond to nearly 400,000 calls every year.The Unified Government of Wyandotte County/Kansas City, Kansas, interviewed four finalists in April after they were announced as final candidates. County officials said there were 19 applicants for the position.The other finalists were Rich Austin, chief of police of Milton, Georgia; Vince E. Davenport, associate deputy director of the U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance, Washington, D.C.; and Pamela Waldeck, deputy chief, Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department.Ashley Hand, UG director of strategic communication, said the candidates went through an intensive selection process. The process included several community engagement efforts like listening sessions with community groups, as well as a community survey.The community survey identified several important criteria for residents, including continuing to foster trust and transparency, building on diversity, community involvement, increased visibility, crime reduction and continued advancement of technology, Hand said.Oakman has served as deputy chief of KCPD since 2017 and is a 29-year veteran. He commands the patrol bureau, including six patrol divisions, the Kansas City International Airport Division, special operations, traffic, social services, crisis intervention and detention services.
