

The Kansas City council voted Thursday to approve creating a new Housing and Community Development Department.The department will deal with tenant advocacy, homelessness prevention and support, affordable housing preservation and creation, and overall community development. City officials said one of the key components of the new housing department is the Office of the Tenant Advocate, which will help renters with services for safe and affordable accommodations for residents. ”All Kansas Citians deserve to have stable and affordable housing —regardless of ZIP code or socioeconomic status. With nearly 2,000 children and adults experiencing homelessness in and around Kansas City, Kansas City government understands that systemic housing issues will require more than just short-term solutions,” Mayor Quinton Lucas said in a news release. The new department will formally begin on June 1.
