KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A judge has denied a motion to dismiss felony charges against a 42-year-old Kansas City police detective who shot and killed a Black man in 2019. Eric DeValkenaere was charged last year with first-degree involuntary manslaughter and armed criminal action in the death of 26-year-old Cameron Lamb. DeValkenaere’s attorneys argued he did not act recklessly in shooting Lamb, who was killed while sitting in his pickup truck in his backyard. They contend Lamb created the risks that led to his shooting. Lamb’s family has disputed police accounts of the shooting. The Jackson County prosecutor said the judge could not determine before trial if the state has enough evidence to convict the detective.
