John Nogowski traded to Pittsburgh

St. Louis Cardinals: Yadier Molina left off All-Star Game roster by Robert Murray

The St. Louis Cardinals have traded John Nogowski to the Pittsburgh Pirates after the first baseman was DFA’d in recent days.

It was a great story while he was here, but John Nogowski is no longer a member of the St. Louis Cardinals.

Over the weekend, the Cardinals shipped Nogowski to Pittsburgh for cash.

Nogowski, 28, was DFA’d a week ago when the team added Roel Ramirez to the active roster.

Nogowski debuted with the team last year at the age of 27 and his performance over the winter in the Dominican combined with last year ultimately was part of the reason why the team cut Rangel Ravelo.

However, the hit-first first baseman never got much of a shot with the Cardinals after a stellar spring training. In 20 plate appearances over 19 games, Nogo had just one hit and one walk this year.

A fan favorite, Nogowski will be remembered for his work ethic and willingness to try whatever he could to help the team and help himself. In spring, Nogowski carried around a notepad to take notes from Paul Goldschmidt or anyone else he could gain knowledge from. He also began to learn the corner outfield spots to try and make himself more useful to the team.

A week after the trade to Pittsburgh, Nogowski has been recalled and is starting for the only team worse than the Cardinals in the NL Central. The way that these types of trades have gone recently for the Cardinals, Nogowski will go on a run with the Pirates, and I don’t think anyone would be surprised.

We wish Nogowski the best and thank him for his time in St. Louis, even if it was only a total of 24 plate appearances with the club.
