Notre Dame and Iowa State each had three players selected to The Associated Press preseason All-America team, led by Fighting Irish defensive back Kyle Hamilton and Cyclones running back Breece Hall.
The preseason All-America team presented by Regions Bank was released Monday, five days before the first games of the season kickoff.
Eight teams have at least two first-team All-Americans, with seventh-ranked Iowa State and ninth-ranked Notre Dame leading the way.
Along with Hall, Iowa State is represented on the first team by tight end Charlie Kolar and linebacker Mike Rose.
Hamilton is joined by Fighting Irish teammates Cain Madden, a guard who transferred from Marshall in the offseason, and running back Kyren Williams, who made the team as an all-purpose player.
Oklahoma’s Spencer Rattler is the first-team quarterback and Sooners teammate Nik Bonitto made the team at linebacker.
Defending national champion Alabama is represented on the first team by outside linebacker Will Anderson Jr., and offensive tackle Evan Neal.
Clemson’s two first-team All-Americans were receiver Justyn Ross, who missed all last season with a neck injury, and defensive lineman Bryan Bresee.
Ohio State’s Chris Olave is the other first-team receiver, and Buckeyes defensive tackle Haskell Garrett made the preseason first team after being a second-team selection after last season.
LSU (cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. and kicker Cade York) and Texas A&M (tackle Kenyon Green and defensive end DeMarvin Leal) each had two first-team All-Americans.
Hall and Northwestern safety Brandon Joseph were the only preseason All-Americans who are coming off first-team All-America seasons.
University of Iowa junior Tyler Linderbaum has been named the first-team center. The 6-foot-3, 290-pound Rimington Trophy finalist earned first-team All-America honors from The Athletic and Pro Football Focus last fall. He was a second-team All-America honoree by The Associated Press, FWAA, Phil Steele, and the Walter Camp Foundation.
The Solon native was also named preseason first-team All-Big Ten and preseason first-team All-America by Athlon Sports.
Hall, who became the first unanimous All-American in Iowa State history in 2020, finished sixth in the Heisman Trophy balloting and was one of three finalists for the Doak Walker Award in 2020.
Hall, the 2020 Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year, led the nation in rushing yards (1,572), 100-yard rushing games (9) and consecutive games with a rushing touchdown (12) in 2020.
He also set or matched five Iowa State season records: touchdowns (23), rushing touchdowns (21), scoring (138), multi-TD rush games (8) and consecutive games with a rushing touchdown (12).
Rose, a senior, was the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year and an All-Big 12 First Team recipient in 2020 while leading the Cyclones to a win over Oregon in the PlayStation Fiesta Bowl.
Rose, who has started all 38 games in his career, was named to multiple All-America teams in 2020 and has earned All-Big 12 recognition in each of his three seasons in Ames.
This past year, Rose had the most tackles in the Big 12 (96) and was credited with 10.5 tackles for loss (TFL). He also led all NCAA linebackers nationally with five interceptions, the most by a linebacker in school history.
Rose will enter his senior year with 248 tackles and 29.0 TFL, ranking 10th all-time in school history.
Kolar returns for his senior season as one of the best tight ends in the country. The two-time All-American and two-time first-team All-Big 12 choice was one of three finalists for the Mackey Award in 2020 and is on pace to shatter virtually all tight end marks in Cyclone history.
Kolar tallied 44 receptions for 591 yards and a team-high seven touchdowns in 11 games last year. His seven touchdown catches tied for seventh on ISU’s season list.
The Norman, Okla., native owns ISU career records for tight ends in receptions (106), receiving yards (1,425) and touchdown grabs (17).
