At Kansas City magazine we generally try to keep the focus on the people we write about and all the important things they’re doing in and for the city. We’re quick to tell you who locally is winning Beard Awards, but we really don’t love bragging about ourselves.
But, once a year or so we do get to submit our work for awards consideration to the City and Regional Magazine Association, the group that represents titles like Texas Monthly, St. Louis magazine, our friends down at 417 in Springfield and other titles we respect a lot.
This year, we found out we’re finalists in three categories—including the most coveted of all, General Excellence. (Think of it like Best Picture at the Oscars, but based on three issues of a city magazine.)
Our weight class (read: circulation) puts us up against Columbus Monthly, dsm Magazine, Honolulu and Sonoma Magazine in the finals —but, truly, being nominated is a massive, massive honor on its own. That honor is the result of a lot of amazing people we work with in the city, including writers, photographers and the people who spend time talking to us for stories. Our magazine has been around for almost two decades now, and this is our first nomination in the category.
Our very talented and hardworking art director Katie Henrichs is again a finalist for Cover Design—she won first place for Best Spread Design last year, when she was also nominated for her covers.
Our longtime food critic Natalie Torres Gallagher is a finalist for her essay “My Mother’s Rice,” which grapples with issues of identity and loss in the pandemic era.
The awards will be announced at the CRMA’s annual conference in St. Louis in late May.
