Former Kansas City Chiefs coach chosen for Kentucky Sports Hall of Fame

Romeo Crennel hasn’t been with the Kansas City Chiefs for a while, but the former head coach of the Chiefs is making his way into the Kentucky Sports Hall of Fame.

A former head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs is set to make his way into the Kentucky Sports Hall of Fame. Romeo Crennel, the head coach of the chiefs during the 2012 season, was one of six people to be selected as a member of the Kentucky Sports Hall of Fame in 2021.

Crennel, a Lynchburg, Virginia native, went to Fort Knox High School in Kentucky. He later played college football for Western Kentucky University, where was played on both the offensive and defensive lines.

Following the conclusion of his college football playing days in 1970, Crennel stuck with Western Kentucky for a little while longer when he became an assistant coach for the Hilltoppers.

After leaving Western Kentucky, Crennel moved on down to west Texas where he joined the Texas Tech Red Raiders. He left Lubbock for Oxford, Mississippi and the Ole Miss Rebels and then later moved on over to Atlanta to join Georgia Tech.

From there, his impressive NFL coaching career began.

Crennel started coaching for the New York Giants in the early 1980’s and has been a coaching staple in the NFL ever since. He made his way to Kansas City as the defensive coordinator for the Kansas City Chiefs in 2010 and later served as the interim head coach in 2011.

He then took over as head coach full time in 2012, but his team wasn’t successful enough for Crennel to keep the job beyond that.

Former Kansas City Chiefs head coach Romeo Crennel will be inducted into the Kentucky Sports Hall of Fame.

Crennel is one of six to make it into the Kentucky Sports Hall of Fame this year. Here’s the full list of inductees for 2021:

  • John Asher
  • Dwane Casey
  • Romeo Crennel
  • Rachel Komisarz Baugh
  • Keith Madison
  • Elmore Smith

Crennel is currently with the Houston Texans and he’s no longer coaching in the same capacity that he once was, but his long and winding coaching career has helped him earn a spot in the Kentucky Sports Hall of Fame.

Congrats to the former Kansas City Chiefs coach and to everyone else whose name will be up in the Kentucky Sports Hall of Fame! To read more about the KSHOF, click here.
