KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A former Jackson County sheriff’s deputy has been sentenced to 180 days in jail for shooting a woman the back. Jackson County prosecutors had recommended that 31-year-old Lauren Michael be sentenced to six years in prison for shooting Brittany Simek in August 2019. Michael told investigators the shooting occurred after Simek took the deputy’s stun gun and shocked her with it. Investigators said evidence at the scene did not support that story. Michael pleaded guilty in January to felony first-degree assault. In 2017, Michael shot and killed a suspected shoplifter at a Walmart. She also claimed that suspect took her stun gun and shocked her with it. No charges were filed in that case.
