Following a deadly week, officials urge Nebraskans to drive safely

June 14, 2021 4:07 pm

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — The Nebraska State Patrol (NSP) and Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) are urging motorists to drive safely after a tragic week on the state’s roadways.

“This past week, 15 people lost their lives in traffic crashes across Nebraska,” said Colonel John Bolduc, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “Every life lost is a tragedy, and this past week should serve as a stark reminder for everyone of how critical it is to drive safely.”

Although each crash was different, there are steps travelers can take to reduce the risk of being involved in devastating wrecks.

NSP encourages drivers to obey traffic laws, drive the speed limit, drive sober, avoid distractions, and always wear a seat belt.

“Every traffic fatality has devastating impacts on the communities and families left behind. As summer hits full swing and people across the state begin to enjoy travel again, there is increased traffic on roadways,” said NDOT Director John Selmer. “We want everyone to be able to enjoy this summer safely. Please remember to plan your trip in advance, practice patience, and to always buckle up.”

In 2021, there have been 94 roadway fatalities compared to the usual average of 91.
