Field of Dreams MLB game forecast calls for a chance of thunderstorms

The New York Yankees and Chicago White Sox will be greeted with mostly sunny skies and hot weather when they arrive in Iowa for their game at the Field of Dreams.

Major League Baseball built a new stadium near the iconic movie ballfield, and a capacity crowd of about 8,000 is expected Thursday. First pitch is scheduled for 6:15 p.m. on Fox.

The National Weather Service forecasts a high of 89 degrees in the area Thursday. Private weather forecasting firm AccuWeather says there’s a 40% chance of rain that afternoon and a 55% chance of rain that evening.

Any storms on Thursday could come at the tail end of a brief uptick in severe weather in the Midwest.  An area of low pressure in the Midwest and Great Lakes regions will “continue to keep these regions in a favorable position for severe storms that could produce damaging winds, large hail, and tornadoes,” according to a National Weather Service forecast. The highest potential for damaging winds from these storms is centered over southern Wisconsin, northern Illinois and northeast Iowa, according to the NWS.

More on MLB at Field of Dreams:

Tuesday’s high in Des Moines will be 93 degrees, but the heat index could make conditions feel as hot as 105 degrees, according to the NWS. There is a 50% chance of thunderstorms Tuesday night, mainly after 8 p.m.

Wednesday will be almost as hot. Des Moines has a forecast high of 94 degrees and the heat index could feel as hot as 103 degrees.
