Crime Tip Tuesday: Safety on the way to school

Here are some things you and your kids should know to stay safe on the way to and from school.

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – We’re still on the back-to-school push, and when you push your kids out the door and into the classroom, you want them to stay safe on their way there.

If they walk to school, walking in pairs or groups offers additional visibility and protection.

If you have a student who rides their bike to their classes, make sure they’re riding responsibly, and that they’re wearing all proper safety equipment. A helmet is paramount. In Lincoln, you’re required to have a front light and blinking red taillight on your bicycle.

If your child gets dropped off, don’t let them get out into the street. Always have them exit on the sidewalk side, away from the street.

It’s also important to impress on your child that they should not dart out from between cars to get across the street. Crosswalks are the safest option.

Once they’re at school, they should know about stranger danger. Make sure they know who will be picking them up from school and make sure they understand who is allowed to pick them up from school and activities.

As always, if you’re concerned about actions happening around a school, don’t hesitate to call police.
