The Kauaʿi Police Department (KPD) said Samuel Martinez, age 23, of Nebraska, reportedly flew to Kauaʿi on May 12 with the intention of hiking and camping while on island.
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Authorities are asking for the public’s help locating a University of Nebraska-Lincoln student reported missing in Hawaii.
The Kauaʿi Police Department (KPD) said Samuel Martinez, age 23, of Nebraska, reportedly flew to Kauaʿi on May 12 with the intention of hiking and camping while on the island.
According to a report, he was expected to return to Nebraska on May 25 but missed his outbound flight.
“When there was no, ‘Samuel calling for a ride from the airport out of Omaha back to his place in Lincoln’, brothers and friends started letting us know how concerned they were, as we were,” Ted & Cherie Martinez, his parents said.
This missing person case was initially reported to the Lincoln Police Department.
Nebraska police reached out to KPD on May 27 at which point a miscellaneous outside assist report was generated and an investigation on-island commenced.
According to a preliminary report, flight records and safe travel records indicate that Martinez did indeed land on Kauaʿi on May 12 and was screened for entry onto the island at the Līhuʿe Airport.
Further investigation revealed that Martinez acquired eight separate permits to camp at different locations around the island, including Kōkeʿe State Park and the Kalalau Trail.
Police are working with little information at this point, but are slowly picking up leads like the last Snap Chat that was taken by Martinez his first night on the island.
Ten hours after that video was taken, a witness reported seeing him at Kōkeʿe State Park on May 13, which was his first intended campsite. That hiker said everything seemed well when he saw Martinez.
“This is just another piece to the puzzle,” Ted Martinez said. “It’s good that he had made it to his campsite and on his itinerary. We have the belief that he’s sticking to his plan and his campsites and hoping he’s doing well. He may be lost.”
Multiple attempts to contact Martinez have been unsuccessful and the investigation remains ongoing.
Martinez is approximately 6 feet tall and weighs around 180 pounds. He has brown hair and brown eyes.
Anyone with information about Martinez’s whereabouts on the island is urged to call KPD at 241-1711.
