Aurora residents still cleaning up after recent storms left behind damage

Aurora storm damage

AURORA, Neb. (KLKN) – Days after storms rolled through Nebraska, the city of Aurora is still cleaning up and could be for the next six months.

“What’s next is just getting a hold of the insurance company and trying to get things back to the way they were and cleaning stuff up,” Sonja Schaffert said. “You always take a risk out here with the storms.”

The clean up process is just beginning for Sonja Schaffert, one of many Aurora residents who has extensive damage on their property after recent storms.

“I was about to go to bed and the wind started picking up,” Matthew Luddington, an Aurora resident said. ” I looked out my window and saw that bin, all the way back there, was kind of caved in a little bit.”

The grain bins took the hardest hit.

And unfortunately, this isn’t the first time Schaffert’s grain bins have been damaged by Nebraska storms.

“I’m a little bit desensitized, I didn’t get out of bed that night,” Schaffert said. “But yeah, I could hear it, it was pretty gnarly.”

The bins will eventually be rebuilt, the tree limbs will soon become fuel for a bonfire and the trailer will be put back on four wheels. It may just take six months.

“You start with the equipment around the farm with the chainsaw, that’s what happens, so yeah it was kind of depressing,” Scfhaffert said. “But my garden is safe, I think will bounce right back, didn’t wreck my garage or my chicken shed, all the pets are okay.”

She’s just thankful the damage didn’t look like what was left behind after the historic storm of 2008.

“Some of the stuff from the 2008 tornado is still all back here against the building, so it does take some time,” Schaffert said.
