ROCKFORD — Award-winning multimedia journalist James Stratton is leaving 13 WREX after three years on the anchor desk.
Stratton, 29, announced Wednesday that he has accepted a job as chief investigative reporter and fill-in anchor at KCCI-TV, the CBS affiliate in Des Moines, Iowa.
Stratton’s last day at 13 WREX is Thursday.
In 2018, Stratton helped launch 13 Investigates, the station’s investigative reporting team along with former co-anchor Kristin Crowley and journalist Mary Sugden.
Stratton earned a Regional Murrow Award for “Excellence in Writing” for his work on several different issues in 2020, including the COVID-19 pandemic, racial and social unrest and Rockford’s record number of homicides.

“I’m incredibly thankful for my time and for the people here at WREX and in Rockford,” Stratton said in an email. “Day in and day out the journalists at WREX strive to be the best that they can be and I’m honored to have been one of them. I’m incredibly excited to become the chief investigative reporter at KCCI and join Iowa’s news leader. My passion is investigative reporting and telling stories that matter and I’m thankful to continue to do that in Des Moines.”
Stratton is from Sherrard, Illinois, and graduated from Augustana College with a bachelor’s degree in multimedia journalism/mass communication and political science.
“James has been a great leader and has been one of the many people here at our station that has given WREX’s investigative reporting national exposure and national recognition,” 13 WREX General Manager Ed Reams said in a statement. “We are sorry to see him go, but I know this is a wonderful opportunity that will continue to grow his career.”

Stratton’s departure comes about five months after Crowley, an eight-year veteran of the station, left 13 WREX for an investigative reporting job at WXIA-TV in Atlanta.
Chicago native Brittany Hardaway joined 13 WREX on July 1 to co-anchor the station’s 5, 6 & 10 p.m. weekday newscasts.
